On October 14, 30 international students enrolled in Japanese language schools participated in the Open House Program at our university.
This program is held annually and is organized by the Hiroshima Prefecture International Student Support Center. Its purpose is to provide international students enrolled in Japanese language schools both within and outside the prefecture with the opportunity to experience real university level lectures at universities in Hiroshima Prefecture and to foster their interest in pursuing higher education here. This year, international students from Myanmar, Vietnam, China, Indonesia, and Bangladesh—attending the Hiroshima YMCA Vocational School, IGL College of Medical and Welfare Sciences, Okayama College of Foreign Languages, Hiroshima International Business College, and HLA Japanese Language School—participated in the event.
On the day of the event, following a presentation from the Center for International Education and Exchange explaining the entrance requirements, Professor George Harada conducted a mock lecture. Participants listened to the lecture intently and were able to think through the specialized topic on their own and expand on their ideas through the discussions held during the lecture.

Next, three Hiroshima University of Economics (HUE) international students spoke about their university life, extracurricular activities, and the reasons they chose our university. Seeing them give their presentations with such confidence as university students served as a great inspiration to the international students from the Japanese language school who attended the event, and it gave them an opportunity to deepen their desire to study at the university themselves.
Thereafter, the group divided into smaller groups and toured the campus facilities under the guidance of HUE international students, followed by lunch at the student cafeteria, “JOIA.” They also toured the university library and the state-of-the-art studio at the Media Information Center. We hope that the tour and the conversations with the HUE international students enabled the Japanese language students to get a feel for university life.
Finally, we took a commemorative photo on the rooftop of the Media Information Center. Under a clear autumn sky, we enjoyed the view from the rooftop as we concluded the university’s open house.
Our university provides a variety of opportunities to help international students gain a deeper understanding of university studies and student life. We will continue to support international students in their academic advancement through collaboration with Japanese language schools and other institutions.
