On Friday, July 17, we hosted Laurie Peters, Deputy Ambassador, Canadian Embassy in Japan, for a roundtable discussion with students involved in study abroad and international exchange programs.
Among the participants were students who had studied abroad through the university’s exchange program, as well as those planning to study abroad in the future. Minister Peters spoke about her life in Canada from childhood to the present, as well as her memorable cultural experiences in Japan. The students actively engaged in conversation in English asking questions and talking about their goals after their study abroad experiences.
Students who attended the discussion session shared comments such as, “I learned that being exposed to different cultures and values through a variety of experiences contributes to my personal growth.” Another comment mentioned that “The discussion with Minister Peters has been a great source of inspiration for my upcoming study abroad program, and I want to actively seek out learning opportunities that go beyond what I can gain in the classroom.”
In addition, during her visit to the university, Minister Peters visited the library to see the university’s rare book collection. The Minister paid a courtesy call on President Yuko Ishida, who also serves as Canada’s Honorary Consul in Hiroshima, and they exchanged views on the future collaboration between the Hiroshima University of Economics and Canada.
