On Saturday, September 27, 23 short-term exchange students for the second semester and 9 Japanese students from our university visited Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park. At the beginning of each semester, the Center for International Education Exchange hosts international students to participate in the “Welcome Peace Park Tour.” The aim of this program is to promote intercultural exchange and the deepening of the understanding of Hiroshima’s history and peace.
The group first visited the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum and attended a lecture by a survivor who shared her experiences of the atomic bombing. The international students listened intently. Among the students' responses were comments such as, “I realized that Hiroshima has come to be as it is today because of the resilience of its people” and “I learned that recognizing both the good and bad aspects of history can help humanity avoid repeating the same mistakes.” It was a valuable opportunity for students from diverse backgrounds to seriously think about peace and the future.
After that, the group visited the museum exhibits together with Japanese students. The students seriously viewed the displays and exhibits that conveyed the reality of the atomic bomb damage. Next, the group divided into small groups, and the Japanese students guided the exchange students in English around various parts of the Peace Park.
Through this "Welcome Peace Park Tour," students learned a bit of the history of Hiroshima and grasped the importance of peace. It is hoped that the insights and lessons gained in this tour will be useful for each of the participants in the future.
