“Exchange presentations” is a new intercultural activity that promotes friendship among international students (on the Short-term Exchange Program (STEP)) and Japanese students (volunteer Japanese language partners). There presentations are held in the international commons during lunch period where many students can listen. The exchange presentations were held from December 10 to 12. Students formed groups of different countries and created their own international exchange activities to present on.

The Polish team visited Miyajima, a World Heritage Site, to experience “Miyajima-bori,” one of the traditional woodcrafts designated as a traditional art craft of Hiroshima Prefecture. Through the experience of carving and coloring designs on round wooden trays, the students deepened their understanding of history of this traditional Japanese craft.
The Mexican team visited a Mexican restaurant in the city center and gave a presentation on the differences between Mexican food in Mexico and Japan. The students enjoyed the cultural differences in the flavors and deepened their exchange.
One of the teams visited Onomichi City to learn about its history and traditions, and another team visited a cat café in Hiroshima City to experience a different culture. All the teams made many discoveries through this program.
This event was so successful. We have decided to hold similar Exchange Presentations each semester to promote intercultural exchange, understanding and friendship.
